Looks like those crazy scientists might have solved the oil shortage and helped to stop Global Warming, as reported at Times Online (UK). A startup company here in California has genetically engineered bacteria and yeast to digest agricultural waste and produce something very close to crude oil as a byproduct. Refine it, and you can get all the stuff you can get from fossil fuel oil. Plus, it more than carbon neutral — they claim the process is carbon negative. Now it’s a matter of scaling the process up to mass production, which is no small matter, since we use many millions of barrels of oil a day. So no relief at the gas pump for a little while yet.
