I want to learn to play the piano so I can invite friends over for a singing party, like karaoke, only I supply the music with my keyboard (I already have one) and everyone gets the lyrics from a songbook. My goal is to be able to competently and smoothly provide an improvised accompaniment, in number of different styles, to a song from reading the chord progressions. I want to meet that goal within a year. I don’t need to be “the best” or even great, just good enough to have fun. I could even start by just playing the chords straight, in tempo. But I’d like to be able to do a bit more than that.
I’ve wanted to learn to play for a few years and for a few weeks two years ago was practicing exercises from a self-learning course. But just “learn to play” isn’t a concrete enough goal. Actually, I should set a date now for the first party. Sometime in the summer, perhaps. That would give me a deadline to practice against. I can shoot for just being minimally competent by then, enough to do two or three styles and just songs with simple progressions. I’ll update this post when I’ve settled on a date.
